To launch the Spring 2017 Seoul Biennale International Studios, professors and students from six international and local universities—along with the Biennale’s director and curators—will gather for an afternoon discussion on the future of Changshindong and its surrounding neighborhoods. Just outside Dongdaemun’s east gate and the historic city wall, the area hosts dense garment micro-factories, housing, and retail—a tightly woven social, economic, and logistical network.
The symposium will feature presentations by the Biennale’s Production City curators and studio leaders conducting research in the district. Participating universities include Hong Kong University, Washington University in St. Louis, National University of Singapore, University of Technology Sydney, University of Seoul, Hongik University, and Seoul National University.

As part of the ongoing Seoul Biennale International Studios, professors and students from Sungkyunkwan University, Université libre de Bruxelles, Yonsei University, and Seoul National University will gather to discuss regeneration strategies for the Seoul Station area and its surrounding neighborhoods. Topics include the impact of the 7017 elevated park, the growing role of social engagement in shaping public space, redevelopment approaches for the rail yards north and south of the station, and the challenge of advancing low-rise, high-density models in place of large-scale development. Join us for a lively discussion on this pivotal area of Seoul’s imminent future.
